What Non-League Day means to Wythenshawe FC

Share

Non-League Day is a chance to recognise everything that makes clubs like Wythenshawe FC special. It is a day that celebrates community football, the volunteers who make it possible, and the pathways that allow players of all ages to be part of the game.

At Wythenshawe FC, that spirit runs through everything we do. With over 80 teams across men’s, women’s and junior football, the club is built on opportunity, belonging and the idea that football should be accessible to everyone. From the first kick of a junior session to a Saturday first team fixture, to our Veterans and Ultras the same values run throughout the club.
We asked some of the familiar faces at the club to tell us why Non-League day is so important.

Women’s First Team Manager James Mulvihill believes Non-League football represents everything that makes grassroots football special.

“Wythenshawe is a proper non-league club, built on community and driven by volunteers. It’s a place where people give their time because they believe in what the club is trying to build and the opportunities it creates for players.”

That sense of belonging is something echoed across the women’s set-up too. Women’s First Team Captain Kirsty describes the environment simply:

“It’s like a family.”

That family feeling extends far beyond the players on the pitch. It includes the coaches giving up their evenings, the volunteers working behind the scenes, the parents supporting from the sidelines and the supporters who follow the club week in and week out.

That sense of community is something felt just as strongly by players who have experienced football at the very highest level. Veterans player Stephen Ireland says what stands out most is the environment around the club.

“From the first day I came here the welcome’s been unbelievable. The fans, the people around the club, everyone just makes you feel part of it straight away. It’s proper football, proper community, and it’s all about fitness, teamwork and enjoying the game again.

To now be in a position where we’re taking a team to America to play under the Wythenshawe badge in TST… that’s something special. I’m proud of the lads and the club, and just grateful to be part of the journey. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead, it’s exciting.”

For First Team Manager James Kinsey, Non-League Day is also about recognising the people who work quietly behind the scenes to make football happen.

“At this level nothing happens without volunteers. There are people here every week giving up their time because they care about the club, and that’s what keeps things moving forward even when things aren’t perfect.

What we’re trying to do is keep building those pathways for players and giving people opportunities, because that’s what clubs like this are built on. Effort, honesty and people who believe in what you’re trying to create.”

Those pathways can be seen right across the club, from juniors taking their first steps in football to players representing the badge at senior level. For many young players, Non-League football is where that connection to the game really grows.

For one Wythenshawe FC junior player, Max, it is about more than just football.

“It gives me extra football to watch when the Premier League isn’t on and I’ve made loads of friends. For me it’s affordable, decent football where you feel part of the club and have a connection with the players. You can follow home and away because it doesn’t cost what Premier League football costs.”

Non-League Day is also a chance to recognise the people who often go unseen. The volunteers setting up pitches. The people running the clubhouse. The coaches developing young players. The media team capturing moments. The sponsors supporting the club. The families who make football part of their weekly routine.

This is what clubs like Wythenshawe are built on. The People.

Non-League Day is a reminder that football at this level is about connection, opportunity and community. It is about giving people a place to belong, whether they play, volunteer, support or simply come along to be part of something positive.

Because at Wythenshawe FC, everyone plays a part in the story.
