After an early pitch inspection, the Ammies were finally able to get another home game under their belt, facing an Atherton side who came into the match on a 16-game unbeaten run.
The Ammies started the game well and showed good energy early on. In the 10th minute, Joel Ankers opened the scoring to give the home side a deserved lead. Atherton responded with an equaliser from a controversial free kick, but the Ammies reacted well and made it 2-1 through Curtis Jones, although there was some confusion in the stands about the final touch.
Wythenshawe went into half time with a strong performance behind them and a deserved 2-1 lead.
The second half saw Atherton come out much stronger and they began to take control of the game. Their pressure paid off as they turned the game around to lead 3-2. With around 15–20 minutes left, the Ammies had to dig deep and put everything behind the ball, but Atherton looked set to take all three points.
However, in the 90th minute, Aaron Dwyer scored his 33rd goal of the season to rescue a point for the Ammies and cap off a hard-fought game.
After the match, manager James Kinsey said:
“The best team we have played here all season. You don’t go unbeaten since the middle of November unless you’re a top team.”
He also praised his players’ effort, adding:
“It’s been so tough and so hard but my lads have stuck to it.”
A good point in the end for the Ammies against a very strong Atherton side.
